The New York Liberty hosted the Los Angeles Sparks for a regular-season game in the 2025 WNBA season. After many games, the side had its full-strength squad available for the matchup following the return of its center, Jonquel Jones. But after just three minutes into the game, the side faced one of the biggest blows, losing their star forward, Breanna Stewart, to an injury.
The player gave up a defensive position and asked for a substitution. Many hoped for her return to the game after halftime, but she didn’t.
What Is The Status Of Breanna Stewart’s Injury?
For the 2025 season, with many impactful players leaving the court injured, the 30-year-old forward remained one of the few stars playing in every game, including the All-Star game. She played a vital role for the defending champions, securing the second position in the demanding league.
But as mentioned above, after three minutes and 19 seconds into the game, while running back for defensive duty, the two-time MVP raised her hand, signaling discomfort, and gave up her defensive position. The Sparks took advantage and scored a three-pointer to take an 11–8 lead.
Breanna Stewart was been ruled out for the rest of the game with what the Liberty are calling a lower leg injury.

Coach Sandy Brondello burned her timeout and substituted her key player to avoid any further damage. She didn’t return to the court, calling a day with three points and a rebound.
When asked in the post-game interview, the HC said, “No update, hopefully she’ll be OK.”
The Liberty lost the game courtesy of Rickea Jackson’s game-winner. The team still holds second place with a 17-7 record. They will play against the Dallas Wings on July 28.

Breanna Stewart’s Absence Will Hurt The New York Liberty
The 2024 champions have one of the deepest rosters in the league. The side made some mid-season signings to provide backups for most of the positions, highlighting their preparations for the playoffs. But the side still relies on starters like Stewart in the most challenging games.

The team’s leading rebounder is averaging 6.5 rebounds, 18.3 points, and nearly four assists per game. She also leads the side with two blocks and 1.4 steals per game, providing defensive stability in the paint region.
Nyara Sabally and Emma Meesseman are also putting pressure on the forward lineup. Jones returned from the injury, but her absence also affected the side, causing them to lose some important games. The three-time champion also has a similar impact on the court for her side. Fans will be hoping to see her back as early as possible.
