How quickly time changes! Only the previous year, the New York Liberty were celebrating their WNBA triumph over the Minnesota Lynx. But as this season came to an end, things are looking pretty dull.
In the most unexpected manner, the Liberty front office decided to fire head coach Sandy Brondello. This was a shocker because Brondello led the team to a championship as well as a playoff this year.
Nonetheless, in a recent announcement, Toronto Tempo appointed Brondello as their head coach. And with that, the Liberty now has a void to fill ahead of the upcoming year.
Who Will Lead The New York Liberty From Here On?
This offseason, the WNBA realm has witnessed a serious coaching shake-up. Many of the franchises changed their mentors to ensure a quality season ahead.

Likewise, Liberty would also be looking to shed its rust and regain its lost glory. However, there is a problem. As per the latest news, the Liberty were considering Sonia Raman for the head coach’s position. But that opportunity too has now gone out of their hands.
That is because the Seattle Storm recently signed Raman to lead their team in the next season. This leaves the Liberty as the only team yet to decide on a head coach role.

Surely, the Liberty can always look towards the NBA for acquiring some quality mentors. However, taking a glance at college basketball, Nicki Collen is a name that immediately comes to mind. Recently, she was in talks with the Dallas Wings. However, with the Wings finalizing Jose Fernandez, Collen might be a good option for New York.

Meanwhile, as WNBA fans erupted following Brondello’s unexpected firing, general manager Jonathan Kolb explained why the Liberty front office cut ties with Brondello.
Why Did New York Liberty Sack Sandy Brondello? Jonathan Kolb Has The Answer
The signs were surely there. Looking to defend their championship, the Liberty’s exit from the playoffs raised concerns. Sensing the probable turmoil, interviewers asked Breanna Stewart about Brondello’s future with the team. And sure enough, Stewart fiercely defended her head coach.
She pointed out that Brondello had the backing of all the players. But unfortunately, just four days later, the team parted ways with their head coach.

And with many unanswered questions, it was General Manager Kolb who reflected on the reasons. “This decision was in no way punitive, nor was it reactive — but it’s instead rooted in being proactive. Nor was this decision based solely on the results this past season. Ultimately, we determined that evolution and innovation is what is needed at this time,” said Kolb.
He further added, “This is not a results-based organization. This is not about not winning or winning. It’s about how do we position ourselves to be at the top of the league in a real sustainable way as the league does evolve in the ways we’re talking about on the floor.”
Thus, with a lot going on, the Liberty are still searching for an able replacement for Brondello. Now, it remains to be seen what happens next.
