Just like the fandom and hype, the WNBA has many top names up for the league’s top trash-talking spot. After witnessing an astounding level of attention lately, the league has seen players like Sophie Cunningham taking the unusual route to defend her teammate.
Caitlin Clark might not be the chart topper in this case, but the league has been mostly revolving around her. And her teammate Cunningham got the ‘protector’ tag while retaliating for the league’s treatment of Clark. However, an anonymous poll recently surfaced on the internet, and it had everybody talking about the player making it to the list.
The Athletic’s Anonymous Player Poll Ranks WNBA Stars In Trash-Talking List
It would be an overexaggeration to say that the WNBA is only about Caitlin Clark at this point. Soon after the 2024 rookie season ended, the following season saw a new crop of players emerge on the scene. With more potential players coming into the spotlight, teams needed more players who could hit back with an open mouth as well as with dominant performances.
The Athletic recently published its poll, which has been going on since the very beginning of the 2025 WNBA season. According to the publisher, their “reporters spoke to nearly 40 players from the start of the 2025 season.” While there is more to come as more and more players cast their opinion, the most recent update had players mostly naming veterans from the league.

As per the poll, the Phoenix Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas got the tag of the WNBA’s biggest trash-talker. She got 13 votes out of the 33 total votes, which made her top the list while standing on business for her team. It would be fair to say her defense has played a part in making it to the list.
The voting list included all players from the 13 WNBA franchises, excluding the 30 rookie players who joined the league recently. The names of the players would not be published in order to keep controversies at bay.

Who Are WNBA’s Other Top Trash-Talkers?
While Thomas’ name topping the chart did not come as a bigger surprise for the ones watching her up close, there were a few more names making it to the top five. As mentioned in the detailed poll, after Diana Taurasi’s retirement, Aliyah had fans looking up to her for befitting replies to her opponents. Be it through her hoop or her words.

Additionally, right next to Thomas, it was Courtney Williams who ranked second in the list with a total of five votes. No other player in the list got a double digit vote so far other than the Mercury star.
Marina Mabrey and Skylar Diggins ranked third and fourth respectively with the former getting four and the later gettng two votes. However, the list would be a lot different and intersting after a few weeks as the season ages. We’ll wait to see the outcomes as WNBA promises to be yet anohter highly competitive league.
