As time ticks away, everyone can see the league won’t meet the Collective Bargaining Agreement deadline. And with the WNBPA legal advisor confirming that the league will be missing the deadline, fans and critics alike were curious to know what’s next.
In a recent turn of events, the WNBA leadership requested an extension from the athletes on the existing deadline. This was a crucial move, as the players threatened to go on strike if their demands were not met.
Since the start of the season, the WNBA athletes have demanded a revised revenue-sharing model. Currently, athletes receive a meager 7%, which, when compared to the NBA’s 49%, appears quite modest. Meanwhile, with the tensions rising, the WNBPA has seemingly agreed to extend the deadline.
WNBA Gets 30 More Days To Sort Things Out With Its Athletes
The likes of Napheesa Collier have been actively questioning the unfair pay model in the WNBA. Following her exit interview, the Minnesota star lashed out at the likes of Cathy Engelbert. Accusing her of a lack of accountability, Collier recently asked her fellow mates not to back down from their demands.

And not only Collier, but the likes of A’ja Wilson, Paige Bueckers, Kelsey Mitchell, and more, have actively spoken about equal pay rights. Thus, it was pretty evident that the WNBA stars would not have backed out of their pleas.
Meanwhile, in a recent update on X, formerly known as Twitter, Alexa Philippou posted Ben Pickman’s report about the WNBPA agreeing to the 30-day deadline extension request from the WNBA.

Surely, till now, the negotiations have been progressing pretty slowly. Now, it is expected that things will speed up now that the deadline has been extended. Now then, despite all the talk of a work stoppage, Chiney Ogwumike stated that it is unlikely to happen.

The Collective Bargaining Agreement dilemma has come at a seemingly sensitive time for the WNBA. With the emergence of the likes of Caitlin Clark and more, the league has seen a boom in terms of visibility. It is for this reason that the leadership has clinched a $2.2 billion media deal at the moment.

And now, with the viewership ratings going up, things have been looking pretty promising for the athletes. Thus, according to former WNBA star Chiney Ogwumike, the players would not resort to a work stoppage immediately.
