The WNBPA is not happy with the WNBA’s current CBA proposal, as per the reports, and fans might soon hear the ‘unwanted no’ from the players’ association. The league is trying everything to find a way to fulfil the WNBP’s list of demands.
Amid this, there could be a significant development for the league with the help of the NBA. The men’s basketball league is looking to expand overseas and could even take the women’s basketball league with it.

WNBA Europe League In Serious Discussions
The NBA began in 1947 with 11 teams and now comprises 30 teams. The men’s basketball team backed the Women’s basketball, and the WNBA came into existence in 1997. While it took five decades to get the Women’s League up and running, now the NBA is not looking for any such delay and could take the WNBA with them in their plan for overseas expansion.
Importantly, the investors are also showing interest in the same, as the NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum revealed that one of the first questions from potential investors has been about a WNBA Europe.

“At some point, there’s a conversation to be had about coordinating FIBA’s current women’s league with the NBA’s European project,” Tatum said. The plan is to have a fully functional league from 2027.

“Almost like the Champions League of basketball in Europe. So brands like Real, Barca, Man City, PSG, and AC Milan are playing basketball. That’s pretty compelling. Not only premium live sports content that’s relevant in Europe, but it’s relevant globally, and that includes women’s basketball,” Tatum added.
While the WNBA needs to address Project B’s player poaching threat more than ever, with a few star players already left for the competitive league, this new development could be a massive game-changer for the league.
Will the Proposed Expansion Help the WNBA Counter Rivals Like Project B?
One of the key aspects of the sport is its variety, reach and entertainment value. While Project B is entering the competition with financial muscle power, the new league lags behind history and the NBA in terms of reach. Behind the men’s basketball, the WNBA is also getting its reach and growing its popularity.

With possible entry in Europe and competition between top clubs from the region, the WNBA will not only expand its schedule, fan following, and player pool, but it will also attract more and more sponsorships and benefit from the extended media rights.
However, it’s too early to call the move a possible counter for Project B, as both leagues are still in initial stages; the WNB would benefit from the addition of European club competition for sure.
