The WNBA once again disappointed the players’ association, with both sides agreeing on the extension twice, yet failing to reach an agreement. Nneka Ogwumike talked about players’ unity in the elongated talks, while the league authorities spoke about some flaws in the players’ demands. One aspect that was widely neglected in this discussion was the WNBA franchise.
The league is looking to welcome two new franchises, Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire in the 2026 season. With that, they already have 13 franchises to answer to. But the CBA delay is already testing the franchises’ patience, and now, with no solution yet, there might be many other negative impacts on the league.

WNBA-WNBPA CBA Delay To Impact At Multiple Levels
The CBA negotiations fell apart, with the deadline passed without any solution or progress on the discussions. While players and the league focused on the demands and solutions, franchises prepared themselves for the expansion drafts, free agency, and the WNBA draft.
But with no solution yet, they will still have to wait to decide on these fronts. Moreover, a few franchises will also face issues booking venues or the games. While the Connecticut Sun is searching for a new home altogether, many other franchises may also look for new home courts if they fail to book venues on time following the prolonged talks.

WNBA Players Hopeful For Productive Next Steps
The players’ association had been aggressive in their demands and stayed united on the same, even showing their unity in the strike situation. Though they haven’t called a strike or lockout yet, they are hoping to see some positive steps from the league.
The league representatives also mentioned that they want the 2026 season on the floor, but unless and until both parties take initiative to compromise on certain things, the situation will remain the same, with the franchises facing the heat.
