The CBA negotiations have been making a lot of noise in the WNBA recently. With the players lashing out at the league leadership for the alleged lack of accountability, the WNBA, too, hit back at the players’ association for ‘incorrect’ claims. And all of this back and forth has made the situation pretty much unstable. However, in a recent turn of events, the WNBA Players’ Union reportedly gained significant support.
However, with legislators like Zohran Mamdani standing behind the WNBPA, the CBA negotiations have surely taken an interesting turn. The WNBA is facing the risk of a work stoppage from the players. And to top it off, the recent letter from more than 70 elected officials from the US will make things a bit harder for the WNBA leadership.
WNBA Put On Notice As US Legislators Send Decisive Letter
The likes of the New York City Democrat mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani, along with more than 70 legislators, sent a letter to both the WNBA and the NBA commissioners, Cathy Engelbert and Adam Silver. One of the major asks of the letter was “to bargain in good faith to reach a fair (Collective Bargaining Agreement) in a timely manner.” And they must do it before the October 31 deadline.

Well, that was not all. New York City Council member Tiffany Caban stated, “We all want to be able to take in a full season, but we know that they deserve to get paid what they deserve to earn. It mirrors the fights that everyday working-class women are having every day when they’re saying to their bosses: ‘We need childcare. We need good health benefits. We need an environment that allows us to be present with our loved ones and values the labor that allows you all to make as much money as you do.’” Incidentally, she has been a New York Liberty fan since the club’s founding in 1997.

More than 70 elected officials from around the U.S., including Zohran Mamdani, sent a letter to Cathy Engelbert and Adam Silver this morning urging the league to "bargain in good faith" and reach a deal before the Oct. 31 deadlinehttps://t.co/slTgINbzag
Moreover, the letter also mentioned that this deal is the perfect opportunity to prove that women are valuable workers. Offering them a fair deal will also prove that female players deserve equal pay and treatment. Well, this is not the only instance of outside interference. Back in September 2024, the Washington Labor Council AFL-CIO published a resolution in support of Seattle Storm players regarding the contract talks. Meanwhile, with the CBA talks getting complicated with each passing day, WNBPA executive director Terri Carmichael Jackson recently lashed out at Adam Silver.

Terri Carmichael Jackson Had A Fiery Response To Adam Silver’s WNBA Comments
Silver has actively participated in the WNBA-CBA talks. During an interview on NBC’s ‘Today’ show, the NBA commissioner answered questions about the WNBA stars’ demand for a fair share of revenue. Surprisingly, Silver seemed quite dismissive of the plea for revenue sharing. He noted that the revenues generated by the NBA and WNBA differ significantly. Thus, according to Silver, ‘sharing’ is not the correct word. Hearing such a statement, Carmichael Jackson hit back at the NBA commissioner with a fiery response.

“You know they know it’s bad when the best they say they can do is more of the same: a fixed salary system and a separate revenue-sharing plan that only includes a piece of a piece of the pie, and pays themselves (the league) back first. We’ve come to the table prepared to do business. They’ve responded with bad math and are hoping everyone doesn’t understand what “uncapped” actually means. Adam Silver said it himself on behalf of the WNBA. ‘Share isn’t the word.’ It’s not in their vocabulary,” said Jackson.
Surely, it is evident that the WNBPA is not at all happy with the ongoing discussions. Now, with the recent letter sent to the WNBA, officials expect the CBA negotiations to accelerate.
