As much as the WNBA-WNBPA CBA standoff is making news in recent days, Project B is also stealing the headlines. Former WNBA MVP Nneka Ogwumike signed with Project B. While this was a significant shock for the WNBA fans, the new professional women’s basketball league is also targeting Caitlin Clark.
The news surrounding Project B is gaining traction, as the new league only needs 66 players to start its inaugural season in November 2026, and multiple WNBA stars are already in contact with Project B authorities. Moreover, the league is seeking strong financial backing, too.
Project B Announces Funding Push Targeting Caitlin Clark
The root of the CBA standoff is disagreement on the commercial terms, where players and the league differ on the revenue share and salary value. The rival league could find it easy to attract players if they are open to offering more salaries and equity, and that’s the strategy for Project B.
According to a report from Financial Times, Project B is aiming for $ 5 billion in funding to attract big names, like Clark from the WNBA. The 2024 rookie had been one of the key factors bringing in glitters to the WNBA, and recent viewership stats and attendance records also support the claim.

Losing her would be a significant blow to the WNBA in the long run, as the expansion of both teams would conflict with their schedules, and players might opt out of WNBA contracts if their financial needs are met by playing in just one league. Thus, the WNBA should be worried about Nneka Ogwumike’s move to Project B.
The Fever guard opted out of the Unrivaled league, while some considered the decision was based on her preference to play the traditional 5-on-5 basketball game rather than the 3-on-3 format. But Project B not only offers a 5-on-5 game, its offers are much more attractive than those in the Women’s basketball league.

While Nneka Ogwumike didn’t specify the commercial details of her contract, the 35-year-old forward mentioned that it’s not something that women athletes usually get. She also added that there is an entry-level of equity across the board, which was eye-catching.

The Unrivaled league became famous with the addition of WNBA stars to its exciting format. They added the players with similar tactics. However, according to reports, the compensation at Project B is larger than that of the Unrivaled league, with subsequent incentives in the form of shares.
According to Front Office Sports, Project B player salaries start at $2 million annually, with the potential for multi-year contracts exceeding $10 million.

The league has already signed WNBPA president Nneka Ogwumike—and other WNBA players have already signed to play in the league too, sources told FOS.
Considering the schedule of both leagues, Project B is an immediate threat to the Unrivaled’s 2027 season. While the 3-on-3 league missed out on a few top players like Clark and A’ja Wilson, Project B could win the battle by adding either or both superstars of the WNBA.
