The WNBA 2024 season has been a monumental year in many ways. With the addition of many high-profile rookies, the league attracted multi-million-dollar deals and a new blockbuster broadcasting contract. The players’ association quickly opted out of the current CBA terms and is now set for the new agreement.
Yet, the number crunching is not their day-to-day work and with the high stakes on the line, WNBPA decided to take the help of a Nobel Prize-winning economist. The primary work would be to interpret the technicalities and numbers. Here are all the details.
WNBA Taps Nobel Prize-Winning Economist For CBA Negotiations
The league is making quick moves, expansion, high-value associations, and jaw-dropping deals. The WNBA is looking to cash in on the current wave of popularity, leaving no stone unturned. The world is watching it, and so are the players. So, when they opted out of the CBA signed in 2022, players knew what they wanted.
Players are seeking better salaries, benefits, and a greater share of the league’s revenue, which they believe hasn’t kept pace with the league’s growth. The NBA pays 51% of its revenue back to the players. Currently, WNBA players receive between 20% and 25% of basketball-related income.

They are seeking help from the Nobel Prize winner, Claudia Goldin. Her important task will be providing details and working with the numbers for the players’ association. As per reports, Goldin attended many negotiation meetings and has provided data for the discussions. She will be responsible for interpreting and analyzing various salary-related figures throughout the negotiations.
The American economic historian and labor economist will be crucial for the players’ association to get a lucrative contract from the WNBA. The athletes are looking at this as a perfect opportunity to improve in multiple areas that will help teams and rosters. Interestingly, the 79-year-old economist won the Nobel Prize in ‘advanced understanding of women’s labor market outcomes’ in 2023.

Why Is CBA Vital For WNBA And WNBPA?
The Collective Bargaining Agreement, also known as the CBA, is vital for both the WNBA and the WNBPA. It establishes the league’s fundamental terms, focusing on major factors such as salary caps, roster sizes, player eligibility, and even the length of the season.
The CBA provides a framework for operations and financial stability for the league authorities. With the number of teams increasing, it is understood that there will be longer seasons henceforth. For the WNBPA, it’s a crucial tool for negotiating fair compensation. It will also discuss working conditions and benefits for its members.
As per their previous statements, the players’ association members hinted at major action if their demands were not met. The current CBA deal will expire in October 2025. A new agreement, if approved by both parties, will be applicable from the 2026 season.
