Dawn Staley has become quite the voice in all things women’s basketball-related. Taking the South Carolina Gamecocks to a whole different level, the NCAA coach has attained an iconic status.
Speaking of Staley’s impeccable contributions, she is the one responsible for the rapid emergence of A’ja Wilson. And as a result, Wilson recently heaped praises on Staley for her South Carolina upbringing.
Thus, having so much authority over female basketball, it is a given that her advice would usually be foolproof. However, with her recent endorsement of Raven Johnson, there are a couple of reasons why it should not be considered.
Dawn Staley’s Advocacy For Raven Johnson Might Not Be Considered: Here’s Why
Most of South Carolina’s roster is looking well set for a prolific WNBA run in the future. However, despite the likes of Ta’Niya Latson and Chloe Kitts almost certain to bag good deals in the WNBA draft, the likes of Raven Johnson might not be a top choice. And this is what Staley did not like at all. Following Johnson’s recent double-double against USC, Staley made a strong case on why teams must look to draft Johnson.

Yet, most of the teams might not consider her as a first-round pick. For one, Johnson lacks consistency. Back in the 2023-24 season, she has only shot 40% from the field. While she has definitely improved to a 50% shooting percentage this season, a lot more is left to be seen.

Next, her three-point shooting is also not up to par. In her past three seasons, the South Carolina star has managed to shoot 24.1, 35, and 29.5 percent from the three-point range. This year, too, out of her ten attempts, Johnson has only been able to convert five of them successfully. Thus, even with Staley’s strong backing, the franchises would want to wait and see how things pan out. Meanwhile, as fans and critics remain unconvinced, Staley recently directed an explosive clapback at her haters.
Dawn Staley Has Some Harsh Words For Raven Johnson’s Haters
Staley is not ready to admit that Johnson might not possess the qualities of a WNBA Draft first-rounder. While the Gamecocks’ coach is aware of the negative narratives circulating, she still wonders why critics are sidelining such a talented player.

Expressing her frustrations, Staley recently responded to the naysayers. She said, “When you have a point guard like Raven who is a pass-first point guard…and you hear so many people break her game down and minimize what she brings to the table. It’s disheartening. It’s ignorant because if you really don’t know what she’s bringing to the table, you don’t really understand the game.”
Thus, it is evident that the situation surrounding Johnson is heating up. Now, fans would be eager to see whether she can finally break into the WNBA draft as a first-rounder or not.
