The WNBA has long remained in the shadows. However, with the advent of talents such as Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, the league has seen some unprecedented growth. More and more investors have come in, resulting in a surge in finances as well. Now, while things are looking quite rosy, too much attention towards the league has proved to be a negative. Currently, the league is experiencing turmoil with the likes of A’ja Wilson sending relationship-building advice to Cathy Engelbert, and the CBA negotiations are taking a complicated turn.
However, as it stands, there are numerous other concerns to be addressed. With so much attention coming in all of a sudden, the online misinformation and hate comments are getting more and more notorious.
The WNBA Is Suffering From Significant Online Hatred
The WNBA has surely tried to curb the hate comments that have been coming its way. League commissioner Cathy Engelbert publicly asked for civility and respect from the fans. Additionally, the league’s front office has also improved its mental health offerings. Unfortunately, these measures have had very little effect in curbing the tension. Throughout the season, the players were hit with hate comments, AI impersonations, and even death threats.

For example, narrating her personal experiences, DeWanna Bonner, stated that her inbox was full of “awful, awful things.” She further noted, “We’re here to play basketball. And it sucks that it gets taken away by all these narratives that have been created.”

Surely, all such incidents are extremely concerning for the league, especially at a time when the league itself is struggling to find a middle ground with its players about the revenue-sharing ratio. And if this was enough proof, DiJonai Carrington recently highlighted some hate comments she had received.

DiJonai Carrington Details Horrific Hate Speech From Fan
It is well known that fans are very emotional about the team they support. But sometimes, when emotions get a bit too intense, they cross a line. And this was exactly what happened with Carrington recently. In a recent post on social media, the Minnesota Lynx’s forward made a collage of some horrific comments directed towards her from an account named ‘diego.sal44.’ Carrington sarcastically captioned the post as “Fan Mails” followed by a heart emoji.

And Carrington was not alone. Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark faced harassment from a stalker. Later, officials arrested him. Angel Reese also reported that people heckled her. Thus, with things taking a serious turn, fans now wait to see how the league ensures player safety going forward.
