When the WNBA released its schedule for the season, there were some intriguing matchups. It featured the rivalry of Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, Liberty vs. Aces. However, one significant rivalry was missing. A clash between the two finalists of the previous season- Minnesota Lynx and New York Liberty.
What was more interesting was the fact that the two arch rivals did not face each other until late July. And right from the time being, this idea did not seem one of the brightest. With the waiting period too long, fans became quite agitated. Unfortunately, with the onset of injuries, the idea to prolong the finals’ rematch has totally backfired.
Why Minnesota Lynx Vs. New York Liberty Will Be A Dampener
What the WNBA thought was that the delay would probably push the fans to the edge. Sadly for them, this was a big miscalculation. The fans instead, wanted to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars while they were fit and fresh. Which, unfortunately, will not be happening as of now.
A major reason for the same is the string of injuries that has plagued both the teams. New York Liberty has suffered some significant blows to their side. The likes of Kennedy Burke, Nyara Sabally, and Breanna Stewart are on the sidelines at the moment. Meanwhile, the scenario with the Lynx too, is not very promising.

In a recent setback, Lynx’s star performer, Napheesa Collier, has incurred an ankle injury. Medical evaluations suggest she will sit out for at least a couple of weeks. This means fans won’t get to watch Stewart and Collier go head-to-head in the final three league games. Meanwhile, despite having to watch from the sidelines, Collier recently shared her take on the Lynx-Liberty rivalry.

“It doesn’t feel like a finals rematch anymore honestly… it’s a new year for us and it’s been so long like it’s almost August. So it’s just the two top teams going against each other. We’ll prepare for them like a really great team, which they are. So it doesn’t really feel like retribution for last year. It just feels like we’re about to play a good team,” Napheesa Collier said before the game.
Thus, with the games getting diminished in excitement quotient, fans are surely a bit disappointed. Nonetheless, if the two teams manage to reach the finals, it would be yet another spectacle. For now, fans will have to play the waiting game and see how things pan out.
