The WNBA is not all about rivalries, spats, and feuds. There’s a lot to love, cheer, and prosper, and Sophie Cunningham is teaching everybody exactly that. The Indiana Fever star guard, who’s been taking an extra load in her favorite teammate Caitlin Clark’s absence, keeps it real with her young fans as well.
The Fever is going through a tough stretch. On one hand, their top stars are sidelined with injuries, and on the other hand, they have lost four out of their last ten games. While there’s little to live, love, and laugh for the Indiana fans, Cunningham comes to the rescue.
Sophie Cunningham Impressed With Young Fan’s Question
The Fever’s rollercoaster season took a heartwarming turn after their 90-65 loss to the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday, thanks to a young reporter who stole the show. Cunningham was all smiles in a post-game interview when a kid reporter’s question won her over, lighting up an otherwise tough night.
After dropping a team-high 18 points, including five clutch threes, Cunningham faced the media, but it was a young journalist’s question that got her beaming.
“Did you ever think about quitting when you were younger, and what made you keep going?” the kid asked (via The Spun).
While this might sound like a very simple question, it takes great courage to answer it. After playing for almost six years in the league, the Missouri native had only love to share with the young reporter.

“Great question. You know, yeah, I think when you’re growing up, sometimes it’s really hard. Sometimes you doubt yourself, sometimes you lack confidence. But there’s always a fire in you. And I think the biggest thing is that everyone’s always going to fail. And I think if you’re not failing, you’re not pushing yourself. I just think if you keep showing up, keep working hard, good things are going to happen,” she replied.
With the Fever at 18-14, fighting for a playoff spot, sweet moments like this showed why Cunningham’s a fan favorite, on and off the court. With all of the overwhelming adversity coming at the team, the star guard is trying her best to shine through.
Sophie Cunningham Putting Extra Efforts Amid Fever’s Injury Woes
While helping her team sail through the rough patch, Sophie Cunningham didn’t really expect such a sweet gesture from her former home. She spent five seasons with the Mercury before the offseason trade to Indiana. Playing against her former team, she sank a deep three that had injured teammate Caitlin Clark cheering from the bench.

However, the Fever struggled against the Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas, who notched a historic third straight triple-double. With Clark out for her ninth game due to a groin injury and Sydney Colson sidelined by a non-contact leg injury, Indiana’s depth was tested.
Yet Cunningham’s energy, averaging 11.7 points and 56.3% from three over her last seven games, kept them fighting.
