Indiana Fever star Aliyah Boston was one of many players who voiced her opinion on the league’s referees. Officiating in the WNBA has received huge backlash over the months. This year has been worse as multiple players have lashed out at the poor officiating from referees.
Sophie Cunningham recently voiced her frustration with referees’ favoring Paige Bueckers. Likewise, a few fans, analysts, and former players have talked about the same. As for Boston, she feels she doesn’t understand the officiating anymore.
Aliyah Boston Shares How Inconsistent Officiating Affects Players
Boston recently appeared on her podcast with Candace Parker and highlighted how inconsistent officiating affects players. She talked about how difficult it was in such situations.

“I feel everyone’s kind of looking for consistency. Sometimes it is hard to find your groove. Because you’re always like, ‘ooh, are they calling that one?’ I get told, ‘Don’t fade away because then they’re not going to call it.’ But then my opponent fades away, and then it’s like a foul because you weren’t A to B, and I’m like, I don’t understand anymore. I don’t understand,” Aliyah Boston said.
“I don’t know. But, I mean, my approach always is going to be just go in and hoop, and see how they call it and then, have to adjust that way,” Boston continued.
The 2023 WNBA Rookie of the Year is undoubtedly one of the most talented players in the league. Now that top players are voicing their opinion, the league’s poor officiating cannot go unnoticed. WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes urged referees to take control of certain situations.

Aliyah Boston Says Stephanie White’s Halftime Talk Changed Their Approach
The Indiana Fever are still fighting for a playoff spot. Without Caitlin Clark, things are not getting any better. To make things worse, Sophie Cunningham is sidelined for the rest of the season. A total of four players are placed on the injured list.

Remaining players like Aliyah Boston have to carry the weight as pressure continues to mount. The Indiana Fever had a must-win game against the Connecticut Sun. With all the struggles, they were trailing 21 points with just 10 minutes left in the third quarter. It was Stephanie White’s halftime talk that fueled the Fever.
Aliyah Boston revealed that White’s fiery talk changed their approach and eventually helped them win the game.
“She called us soft a little bit, here and there, and she was like, ‘get it together. You aren’t quitters, we’re resilient.’ That fueled us,” Boston said.
It was a strong comeback for the Indiana Fever that kept them alive in the playoff race. The Fever squad will play the best team in the league in their next two games as they face the Minnesota Lynx.
