The WNBA 2026 draft has one of the deepest classes in the league’s history. Even though the Wings won the draft lottery, they would be scratching their heads for the ‘perfect’ choice. It’s not 2025 anymore, when Paige Bueckers was the unanimous top pick, but the wings will have to look for NCAA players and even foreign stars like Awa Fam.
Many earlier saw Azzi Fudd as the obvious choice, but Lauren Betts keeps lighting up UCLA senior year, proving she’s worth every no. 1 pick hype. Amid these choices, the Spanish sensation is bringing in a unique blend of attributes for the franchise.

Awa Fam As Dallas Wings’ Top Pick
While Paige Bueckers’ dominant Unrivaled performances highlight the critical need for her scoring on the Dallas Wings’ roster, the franchise has multiple choices at the moment. But as per WNBA analyst Michael Waterloo, Fam would be the best-suited option for the Texas franchise.
He wrote, “The rise of Awa Fam is happening sooner than most expected. It makes sense, though, as the 19-year-old phenom has everything that WNBA general managers want in today’s game. She’s 6-foot-6 with great lateral quickness, soft hands, ability to pass at a high level as a big, and switch defensively with good instincts.”

He added, “Offensively, Fam would create a nightmare for the opposing defense in the pick-and-roll with Paige Bueckers. Her versatility allows her to not only work the paint as a traditional big but also extend her range and clear up spacing for the Wings’ guards to operate without a clogged paint. She has the highest upside of any player in the draft this year, and that’s saying something.”

The players’ ability and potential are undeniable at the moment, and her young age (younger than the NCAA players) would be an advantage for her. But there is one more option, a former Wings’ star who could break Fam’s dream of becoming the top pick.
Dallas Wings’ Forgotten Star Could Impact Draft Franchise’s Draft Selection
Drafted in 2021, Awak Kuier is an exciting option for the Wings. She played for three years and averaged around 2.6 PPG and 2.5 RPG. Forgoing her 2024 season, the player went straight to Turkey’s Galatasaray in the KBSL. Now she is one of the top two-way players for the side, and Wings are keeping tabs on all possible candidates returning to the league, though.

Interestingly, the Wings still hold the rights for the 24-year-old forward if she were to come back to the WNBA. If she returns to the lineup, the Wings would opt for a guard instead of a forward; else, the franchise, as it is, would have the very first call to take and a big decision to make.
