The reality is hitting hard now. The Chicago Sky team was out of the playoff race late in August, and many fans raised concerns over the future of their superstar forward, Angel Reese. The forward also sent a strong message to the front office to work on improvements.
It is important to note that the forward is not only an important player on the court but also brings in revenue off the court for the team. Chicago loves Reese and expressed its appreciation with a massive billboard in the Western region.
Angel Reese Sends Stern Warning To Chicago Sky
The 2021 champions had their worst season with a .310 win ratio in 2024. But in the ongoing season, the situation is worse. With a 9-30 record so far, even if they win all their remaining fixtures, their overall win percentage will be down from the 2024 season. This highlights a massive drop in form, even with multiple first-round picks on the roster.

Though the team was struggling in the season, their 2024 rookie was breaking multiple individual records. Reese surpassed Tina Charles for WNBA Rookie double-double history and also improved on her shooting efficiency. Despite her improvement, the side’s struggles put her in a ‘bad light’. Frustrated forward sent a stern warning to the front office, hinting at possible departure if the conditions are not met.
“I am very vocal about what we need and what I want. I’d like to be here for my career, but if things don’t pan out, obviously, I might have to move in a different direction and do what’s best for me. But while I am here, I’m going to try to stay open-minded about what I have here and maximize that as much as I can,” Reese said as per the Chicago Tribune’s report.
The 23-year-old leads the team in scoring and rebounds with around 15 points and 13 rebounds. She also doubled her assist tally from last season and improved on the defensive end. The former NCAA champion wishes for a potent support cast, which is a reasonable demand considering her efforts on the court.

Angel Reese wants the Chicago Sky to do more in WNBA free agency: ‘We can’t settle for what we have this year’ https://t.co/Sg4IZHNkKh
— Chicago Tribune Sports (@ChicagoSports) September 3, 2025
Reese already expressed her two career goals, which the Sky’s current roster won’t justify. The front office must make moves in the free agency to hold on to its prized asset.
What Does The Chicago Sky Need To Do To Keep Hold Of Angel Reese?
The former LSU star formed a strong back-court duo with Kamila Cardoso, as the Brazilian also showed great improvement. Though she lacked consistency in the 2025 season, her presence and production helped the team stay competitive in games. The team lacks a skilled playmaker and three-point shooter to stretch the floor. HC Tyler Marsh tried to use two-time All-Star as a winger in a few games, encouraging her to shoot threes when open. But the plan backfired as her production and rebounding stats were affected.
The 2026 free agency will have very capable free agents, considering the players’ contracts with other teams. The Sky could snatch up a few experienced players, like they tried with Courtney Vandersloot, to complement their forward duo. Moreover they need to provide healthy and efficient bench strength to back their starting five, in order to challenge for the championship in next two years.
It is important to note that Reese is on a four-year rookie deal and could be an unrestricted free agent in 2027.
