Becky Hammon proved her worth as a coach this year. When the Las Vegas Aces were down and out, it was their head coach who pulled her team out of the pit. And while she guided the Aces to a championship run, the limelight is shining brightly on the 48-year-old.
Soon after the season ended, Hammon will have a documentary exploring her NBA coaching challenges. With her extensive coaching experience in both the NBA and the WNBA, the Aces’ head coach has undoubtedly secured a legendary position.
And now, with most of the franchises looking to hire male coaches with NBA experience, Hammon lashed out at the trend.
Becky Hammon Spills Brutal Truth On Sexist Approach In WNBA
Hammon recently sat down in an exclusive interview with Candace Parker and Aliyah Boston. Speaking on the ‘Post Moves’ podcast, Parker pointed out that WNBA teams are more interested in hiring men who have NBA coaching experience.

For example, she pointed out individuals like Nate Tibbets and Alex Sarama, among others. Hearing about this sexist trend, Hammon immediately debunked it by saying that not many of these coaches have actually played in the NBA.
“It’s like, well, how many coaches are actually have played in the NBA that are that are coaching now?” Hammon said. “Not that many. There are some, obviously, and some very successful ones.”

The Aces coach further pointed out that the amount of skill and effort required to shine in the WNBA is the same as in the NBA. She further stated that most of the coaching basics, too, are the same, and thus, the sexist approach does not make much sense. Meanwhile, with the topic of WNBA teams trying to side with NBA coaches going viral, Dawn Staley recently detailed the pressures Hammon has to deal with in the NBA.
Dawn Staley Shares Important Observation About Becky Hammon
Staley has been a legend in the NCAA realm. With some impeccable coaching IQ, Staley has led South Carolina to yet another national championship. Recently, the South Carolina coach was linked to rumors about replacing Tom Thibodeau as the New York Knicks’ coach. Unfortunately, the spot was filled in by Mike Brown despite Staley coming close to history.

Thus, when she saw talk of Hammon qualified for an NBA coaching position, Staley had some important thoughts to share. “It’s not just hiring the first female coach. Because one, if I’m the Knicks coach and you have a five-game losing streak, it’s not going to be about the losing streak. It’s going to be about being a female coach. So you as an organization and a franchise, you have to be prepared about that and strong enough to endure those types of instances when you’re a female coach,” Staley said.

Thus, with things looking fairly rosy for Hammon, fans are eager to see how she can sustain the momentum in the future.
