The Indiana Fever squared off strongly against the Los Angeles Sparks on June 26 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The Fever were without their rookie-of-the-year guard, Caitlin Clark, sidelined by a groin injury. Despite leading much of the way, Indiana fell 92–78, as Spark’s bigs Azurá Stevens and Dearica Hamby turned in dominant performances.
However, Clark was on the sidelines in street clothes, just watching her team struggle without her. Cameras caught her stepping over the boundary line, drawing the officials’ attention. But it was one particular exchange that went viral.
Caitlin Clark Sideline Showdown With Kelsey Plum
Midway through the third quarter stoppage, Clark, standing with one shoe across the court line, argued a foul call with a referee. Sparks veteran Kelsey Plum, noticing the infraction, flashed a mock “T” for technical foul, half-joking that Clark deserved to be penalized for stepping onto the floor.

The referee ignored Plum’s plea, and Clark continued her animated back-and-forth before returning to the bench. The moment, captured in a video, was shared on social media. Despite being inactive, Clark had cameras rolling on her, and fans had a great view of her uncharted expression to Plum.

Additionally, Sparks coach Lynne Roberts was seen laughing on the bench, while teammates chuckled at Plum’s gesture. All of that exchange on the court took away the bittersweet feeling of Clark’s lackluster performance.

The Fever are gearing up for an exciting game against the Dallas Wings this Friday night, but there’s some uncertainty around Clark. This season, the Fever have struggled a bit without Clark, managing only two wins and four losses. Currently sitting at 7-8, the Fever are in ninth place in the WNBA standings.
Caitlin Clark Ruled Out Against Sparks After Late-Night Diagnosis
While Clark continued to make news from the sidelines, she met with an unfortunate injury prior to the game. Just hours before tip-off, Indiana announced Clark would miss the Sparks rematch due to a left groin injury confirmed by an MRI. It marked her first absence since entering the league, ending a streak of durability dating back to her Iowa days.
Head coach Stephanie White revealed she first learned of the injury “late last night,” after Clark reported pain to the training staff. The symptoms prompted the team to take her for an immediate MRI.
However, as per recent reports, Clark did not incur any serious injury that could keep her away for long. White shared the actual update on her injury while giving away a bit of relief to the Fever fans.
“I think it’s very much a day-to-day thing, how she responds to treatment. I like to stay in my lane and let our strength and conditioning and our staff do what they do best. But yeah, found out late last night, and then we’ll treat it day-to-day,” she said. (Via Chloe Peterson)
Clark had just come back from a quad strain, where she posted 32 points in a win over the Liberty, making this setback both unexpected and delicate. Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell will shoulder larger scoring loads, while the coaching staff balances urgency with patience on Clark’s recovery timeline.
