Multiple franchises made a huge splash in free agency, adding former champions or All-Stars to their roster to stay competitive in the season. The Minnesota Lynx, though, lost multiple players in the expansion draft and free agency, and despite Napheesa Collier’s injury concerns, the side kept faith in its ‘remaining’ core of Courtney Williams and Kayla McBride.
While the side has some key additions to the rosters, they will have to prove themselves in the Reeve’s system to earn a long-term future with the side. Amid this, the coach named her veteran guard captain of the roster, which made Williams super-proud.

Courtney Williams Reacts To Captain’s Duty
Cheryll Reeves might have multiple challenges to tackle, especially at the start of the season with Phee’s absence, but captaincy is not one of them. The former Team USA coach named her the number 1 guard as the leader of the side.
When reporters asked the 31-year-old about the new responsibility, she said, “I know, she turned me up.(laughing) I ain’t gonna lie I had to call my momma and my daddy and everybody and tell them… That was my first time hearing her say it out loud.”

Williams added that the coach always treated her like the leader, and this is the first time she said it out loud.

During her time with the Minnesota Lynx, Courtney Williams has been a key playmaker, notably breaking the franchise single-season assist record in 2024 and then surpassing it again in 2025. In the 2025 regular season, she averaged 13.6 points, 6.2 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per game. Her numbers looked even better during the postseason games, with the guard taking more offensive duties.
There are many changes in the lineup for the Lynx, too, following the departure of starters like Allana Smith, injury to Colliers, and the addition of Olivia Miles as the second overall pick in the 2026 WNBA draft. Yet, as per the coach, there won’t be many changes to Williams’ duties.
Cheryl Reeves Clarifies Courtney Williams’ Role Following New Additions
Having the second overall pick in the 2026 WNBA draft handed the four-time champions a chance to get a bright prospect to partner with Collier. The franchise chose to go with a playmaker, Olivia Miles, who thrived on the offensive end of the floor, making a significant impact with her passing.
Her addition raised questions about the team’s current primary ball handler, but in a recent interview, Reeves cleared up any doubt. “No, no, Courtney very much wants to continue in the (PH) role, more than anything whether you call it point guard or whatever, making sure that Courtney is in actions she wants to be in… we want to keep Courtney in that space,” the Lynx Coach said.

The luxury of having two elite ball handlers will allow the Lynx to be more aggressive on the offensive end and compete with the top sides.
