The new season brings in new possibilities, and the 2026 WNBA draft brings in a similar vibe for the Wings. After a disappointing 2025 season, the Texas franchise has only one particular piece to work with – Paige Bueckers.
The front office at the Dallas Wings has already replaced HC Chris Konclanes with Jose Fernandes. And now they will look to add complementary pieces around their franchise player via the WNBA draft and free agency.
Dallas Wings’ Three Top Targets For Backcourt
With the 10-34 record and 13th-place finish, the Wings have around a 40% chance of landing the top pick in the 2026 WNBA draft. Back-to-back top picks hand the team an opportunity to build a strong young core. While many of the draft boards and predictions have Lauren Betts as the top prospect, one must not forget about the free agency before the draft night.

Instead of wasting a top pick on a young forward (who is not A’ja Wilson or Breanna Stewart) and developing her for two seasons to reach the elite level, signing a top All-Star forward from the rich free agency makes more sense. Although Betts or even Awa Fam are unmissable talents, the Wings want to give their fans and PB something to cheer about after back-to-back disappointing seasons.
This leaves the back-court position, where the Wings already have Arike Ogwumike. But her inconsistency in the season would force the Wings to add a player and use her as a starter or even a backup, depending on the development. The following are the three top back-court options for the Wings.
1 Azzi Fudd:

The name that every Wings fan wants to see at the franchise would be the UConn prodigy who already has a strong connection and chemistry with PB. Importantly, after Bueckers’ departure from the championship side, Fudd would lead the charge for Geno Auriiemma, which will highlight her capabilities (there is no doubt, though).
While her connection to the Wings’ rookie is not the only reason for her selection, the guard has been a terrific player for the UConn side, and Bueckers insisted on her recruitment to the UConn team, which speaks volumes.
2 Flau’jae Johnson:

Another high-profile name on the list is the LSU guard who will be the leader for the 2023 champions and has been working hard to lift the title outside of Reese’s shadow. Johnson aims to elevate her performance in her final LSU season, eyeing a top spot in the 2026 WNBA draft, as mentioned in a recent interview.
While her scoring touch will take the pressure off as the 2025 Rookie of the Year, she could also be a playmaker for the side. Her versatility and ability to play with strong forwards make her a good choice for the top pick.
3 Olivia Miles:

Olivia Miles defends her TCU move as she also looks to rise up the ladder to the top draft pick. One aspect of Miles that would attract the Wings is her explosive scoring. Even though he is a scoring guard and falls behind in the play-making numbers, the Wings could use her as a backup guard.
Each and every guard will bring in different skillsets, and it’s up to the Wings and the new coach to make the decision.
