The WNBA CBA had been a topic of discussion for over a year. During the first phase, the discussions focused on its confirmation, and after that, massive salary increases became everyone’s topic. A’ja Wilson set a record with the Super Max contract, and rookie Azzi Fudd also received a mega contract as a rookie. Erica Wheeler was also among the beneficiaries who got a mega contract with the Los Angeles Sparks.
The player not only backed her mega contract with the franchise but also fired shots at critics who doubted her abilities and chances in the 2026 season. Later, realizing her responsibility, the former Seattle Storm player apologized in a video.

Erica Wheeler Apologized Following Her Sensitive Comments On Fans’ Criticism
During the off-season, when the CBA talks were ongoing, fans trolled Wheeler, who lost against Twitch Streamer Ray in a fun game. The player kept the receipt and, after signing a million-dollar contract, chose to give it back to all those critics. In a now-deleted tweet, she made fun of middle-class Americans and now apologized via a video.
“So the second part of my tweet was: because you only make $150,000 a year, that’s why you mad. However, I apologize about the number. … It was never about the dollar amount. It was more so like an expression. And however 150 came about, maybe I should have said 20,000. Maybe this wouldn’t have been an issue,” Wheeler said in the video.

“I’m owning what I said was probably degrading or most people didn’t like it. That was not my intention. If you know me well, I am not a person that is degrading. I uplift everybody. It was never to degrade anybody that’s making $150,000 a year, because that is a great salary. However, I said it in an expressive way. I just don’t like the fact that people are mad that we’re now making money when we fought so hard to really be in this position,” she added.

While Wheeler also criticized the league’s lack of black coaches, she was very vocal on many topics and backed the WNBPA’s success with the mega CBA deal. The player is not new to the LA franchise, as she spent her best year with the franchise, recording many productive stats. But will that similar approach work in 2026?
Erica Wheeler Needs To Adjust With New Look LA Sparks
Erica Wheeler’s 2021 campaign with the Los Angeles Sparks stands as the definitive peak of her career. Starting every game, she carried a heavy offensive load, averaging a career-high 13.6 points and 4.8 assists. Her impact was most visible in high-pressure moments, where she ranked among the league’s top clutch performers.

Wheeler thrived as the primary engine of the offense, using her speed and downhill aggression to create for herself and her teammates, ultimately earning the organization’s trust as a premier floor general.
To replicate this success in 2026, Wheeler must adapt her playmaking to the Sparks’ revamped, star-studded roster. Unlike 2021, when she was the focal point, the 2026 team features elite scoring threats like Kelsey Plum and Ariel Atkins. By utilizing the spacing these shooters provide, Wheeler can find the same driving lanes she exploited years ago. Focusing on transition play and defensive pressure will allow her to mirror that 2021 energy while acting as the veteran glue that connects a championship-caliber lineup.
