Geno Auriemma is a legend in the NCAA realm. And he is once again proving why. Having shaped champions like Paige Bueckers before, the coach is looking to get the UConn Huskies to a second consecutive NCAA title this year. With the team in the midst of a pleasant season, Auriemma warned the fair-weather fans to maintain their distance.
Now, as the March Madness schedule is out, the Huskies have secured the top seeding. And despite their strong performance, there has been some noise supporting UCLA to get the top billing. However, here’s a clear picture of why Azzi Fudd and her team were selected over UCLA.

Did UCLA Deserve The No. 1 Seed Over Geno Auriemma’s UConn?
Following a stellar season, the selection committee gave the Huskies the No. 1 overall ranking, while UCLA took the second spot. Soon after the news came out, critics questioned whether the Bruins deserved the number one spot. One of the arguments presented in favor of UCLA is that they have 19 Quad 1 victories. This is a remarkable achievement, which also means that they have 10 more wins than UConn.
Additionally, UCLA’s squad also holds the number one spot in Wins Above Bubble (WAB) and strength of schedule. Thus, the likes of former Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw publicly supported the idea of the Bruins getting the top seed.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, McGraw wrote, “UConn is certainly good enough to win the national championship, but UCLA and South Carolina have had as much success against a much tougher schedule.”

However, taking a closer look at UConn’s campaign will reveal the truth. The biggest reason for Auriemma’s team getting the nod is how the Huskies are undefeated this season. Additionally, following a 34-0 record, Fudd and co. also hold the number one spot nationally in NET.
The Huskies also boast of nine Quad 1 and five Quad 2 victories. Last but not least, UConn has three more away victories compared to UCLA, which gives them a significant edge, justifying their top billing.
Meanwhile, as he tries to win the title for the second time, the Huskies coach fears Bueckers.
Why Does Geno Auriemma Fear Paige Bueckers?

Auriemma’s team won its sixth consecutive Big East Tournament following their 90-51 triumph over Villanova. Now, as they aim to win the NCAA championship, the biggest inspiration on their path to success seems to be Bueckers. Because, according to the head coach, the team does not want to face taunts from the Dallas Wings’ star if they fail.
“I think Paige is still in the picture today because I think they would be really pissed if we didn’t win this thing at the threat of her saying, ‘I knew you couldn’t do it without me,” Auriemma said.
