During the 2024 WNBA draft, many analysts and fans were surprised to see the Chicago Sky choose Kamilla Cardoso and Angele Reese as sixth and seventh picks. Both players, playing in the same position, were direct competitors on the roster. The franchise tried to work with its plan, but finished 10th last season.
Though they were on the All-Rookie team in 2024, the problem continued in the ongoing season. Newly appointed coach Tyler Marsh tried to work with Chi-Town Barbie’s position and found some success. Now, he is looking to make adjustments to the Brazilian star’s role.
Tyler Marsh Is Trying A New Role For Kamilla Cardoso
The Windy City WNBA team won the 2021 Championship but has struggled since 2023. The 2024 draft class brought new hope with the addition of two NCAA Champions. However, the Cardoso-Reese partnership idea failed miserably, forcing the front office to bring in Tyler Marsh, a coach with experience working with talented forwards.
He first changed a role for the LSU star, who has now found great success and a record-breaking season. While she is out of action due to back issues, HC is now looking at the Brazilian star to get more out of the other forward.
“Teams are making it more and more difficult to get regular, easy post entries into her. I’m not afraid to put people in different positions to try to be successful. We’re going to continue to put her in different positions. The days of just sitting her on the block and throwing it in, those days are probably gone,” HC told the Media. (Via X/CHGO_Sky

The two-time NCAA champ averaged 11 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks per game during her college season. Her impact was visible for Dawn Staley’s team. The defensive anchor was also handy on the offensive end. Staley praised the star and her defensive abilities.

Playing for the Sky, she averaged 10 points and eight rebounds. However, she struggled to guard the rim, which impacted the side’s total defensive rating. In a similar phase, the 23-year-old shone for the Brazil national team. This clearly hints at a need for a role change for the powerful Center.
