Kelsey Mitchell spoke about uncertainty over players’ future in the upcoming season following the CBA delay and the massive free agency talent pool.
The WNBA 2026 has proven to be the transformative one for the league. First, the CBA deal in the 30th season would set the tone for the future, then the massive talent pool in the WNBA draft and free agency will shift multiple players from their franchises and form new dynasties. While the Indiana Fever fans might not be concerned about the first development, they would want to see their 2025 roster back again, including star player Kelsey Mitchell, who was a key piece of their success.
While Mitchell doubled down on Fever Forever mentality, she is one of the top prospects in free agency, and many franchises are already looking to sign her as the centerpiece of their franchise. The player, though, recently spoke about the future on Lisa Leslie’s “Between the Lines” podcast, which might ring a bell for the front office and fans.

Kelsey Mitchell’s ‘Truth Bomb’ Shatters Indiana Fever Dreams
With a career-high performance in the 2025 season, the former Ohio State guard put the Indiana Fever on her back and carried them to the semifinals of the season. Though many other players like Aliyah Boston and Odessey Sims were instrumental for the success of the team, the veteran guard had ‘lion’s share’, making her an MVP finalist and must-have player for the franchise.
But in the uncertain CBA situations and deepest free agency market, the 30-year-old is worried about whether she’ll be on the court this year. And if so, there is another uncertainty about the team she will play for.
In the podcast, she said, “And so none of us knows what our future holds, which is scary. I’ll be honest with you, it’s scary. But on the flip side, it’s like, none of us know what our future holds.”

While the player has already mentioned a condition that would impact her free agency decision, she is torn about signing with the Indiana franchise. “And so when we have these conversations about what we want to do, and what we do see, where we want to go potentially, it comes from a place of understanding,” she added.
The Fever front office openly spoke about the eight-year veteran as its priority signing. One analyst thought seconds this thought and provides a reason for the same.
Analyst Provides Options For Indiana Fever In They Fail To Land Kelsey Mitchell
There are many positives about re-signing the 2018 rookie; there are a few downsides also, as per a WNBA analyst. The first one is her defense, where the player is a below-average defender at the position, hampering the team’s rotations. The second one is the available options. With 100+ players in the free agency that includes the best two-way players like Kahleah Copper and Jackie Young, going for Mitchell would be a ‘bad’ idea.

There is no doubt that Kelsey Mitchell’s future with the Indiana Fever hangs in the balance amid WNBA CBA negotiations; the franchise needs to go for a better option to ensure winnability. The franchise desperately needs to deliver big in the 2026 season with Aliyah Boston entering her final rookie contract season and Caitlin Clark also eager to prove herself with a championship. KM would be a great help, but not the only option for the team.
