Every Indiana Fever fan and player is proud of their 2025 season despite missing out on the championship. However, there is still a slight, sad feeling about the ending as they saw star player Kelsey Mitchell walking off the court, avoiding putting weight on her injured leg. Later, Mitchell revealed a scary “rhabdomyolysis” condition that led to temporary paralysis and muscle shutdown.
Sophie Cunningham discussed the injury in detail on her podcast, as the forward wished to see her team advance to the finals, and the guard’s exit dashed her dream.
Sophie Cunningham Mentions Kelsey Mitchell’s Injury
During her latest episode of the ‘Show Me Something’ podcast, the forward touched on many topics that defined the Indiana Fever’s 2025 season. While she was proud of her teammates, she was sympathetic about the former Ohio State guard as she explained her injury in Game 5..

“She just got a full body cramp…it was bad, she was a little sick, super dehydrated, but really the doctor said you know, like, she played till her wheels came off. Like her body was to a point of exhaustion, where she couldn’t go anymore,” Cunningham said.
“She was in a full-body cramp. They rushed her to the hospital. Got some IVs in her, did some blood work. She’s gonna be good, but she is super sore. She is moving, walking slowly… we’re thankful, but it still sucks,” The Fever forward added.

Injury to Mitchell was one of the turning points in the match-up, as Aliyah Boston also got fouled out against the Aces in the series decider. The Fever team still forced overtime, but couldn’t complete the comeback with a win.
As for the three-time All-Star guard’s off-season plans, she will be playing in the Unrivaled league. Mitchell is confident about playing in the 3-on-3 league, which starts from early January; it is important to see whether she will be part of the Fever franchise in the future.
Sophie Cunningham And Kelsey Mitchell’s Unclear Future With The Fever
As much as both stars played a key role in the Fever’s impressive run, they are unrestricted free agents at the end of the 2025 season. The former Mercury star signed a 1-year contract with the Fever during the offseason, and similarly, Mitchell was on a one-year Supermax contract. While Caitlin Clark urged Cunningham to re-sign with the Indiana Fever after the playoff run, the 29-year-old guard is unsure about the possibility of the WNBA season altogether.
“I hope we got a league. I hope that when it’s all said and done … we can have a season, period. For all the girls, every person that has aspirations to be in the league … that’s the start. Having a league is kind of big for us,” Mitchell said about the possibility of a lockdown.
The franchise is already targeting the superstar guard, as GM Amber Cox has made the priorities clear for the future.
