The 2025 WNBA Season has been record-breaking. Just recently, A’ja Wilson became the first player to score 30+ points and 20+ rebounds in a single game, Alyssa Thomas extended her triple-double record, and Paige Bueckers shattered multiple rookie records, matching Caitlin Clark’s feats. But it was not only the players who made history, the league also broke its previous record.
Yes, the WNBA broke a massive record that had stood for two decades. Interestingly, the league managed to do that with a number of star players out due to injury and fewer teams.
WNBA Sets New Record
Many criticized the WNBA’s decision to expand to 18 teams by 2030, without providing facilities to players amid the ongoing CBA discussions. But the numbers are out, and the league’s decision to ride on its popularity came to light.
As per Colin Salao of Front Office Sports, 2.43 million fans attended WNBA games in the 2025 season. This number is more than the 2002 record attendance of 2.36 million. The record is special considering multiple factors. Firstly, the number of teams in 2002 was 16, while the 2025 season has 13 teams. Even with a lesser number of teams, the league managed to surpass the footfall count at the arenas.

Also, the 2025 season still has around one month left, which would allow the league to widen the gap and set new highs. As per Salao’s report, the Golden State Valkyries and New York Liberty have done their part to increase attendance.
The expansion team already set the highest attendance record for a new team on the opening day of the season. The franchise had 16 sold-out games and still has five home games left in the season.

The Liberty side is also one of the most followed teams, and its followers increased by 29% from last season. The reigning champions attracted huge fans after their title win, as did star players like Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart. But as always, Caitlin Clark and her Indiana Fever team lead the race.
Indiana Fever Leads The WNBA’s Rise
There might be multiple injuries in the franchise, but the team still has great pull, attracting fans across the globe. The team already has most televised games and now leads the attendance record. The 2025 Commissioner’s Cup Winners had over 300,000 fans at their 18 home games.
It is also important to note that Caitlin Clark was out of most of the games and played in only eight home games. Her return is highly anticipated with the playoffs just a month away. As of now, Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell lead the team and are also fan favorites.
