The 2025 WNBA teams are ready, with Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier choosing the players from the talent pool. As per the selection process, both teams had three forwards and two guards in their starting lineups. The captains then complete the teams by selecting players from the reserves pool.
While the record-setting game will be exciting, Sue Bird and her podcast co-host, Megan Rapinoe, had a little fun before the game by drafting their teams without considering position quotas. Here are the results and the former champion’s claims about the selections.
Sue Bird Thinks Guards Will Dominate WNBA All-Star Games
Before the draft, the four-time champion drafted players with her co-host, Megan Rapinoe. While the 12-time All-Star’s team was filled with guards, Rapinoe’s team was stacked at the forward position. The 44-year-old former guard chose Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, Nneka Ogwumike, Allysa Grey, and Satou Sabally.
Megan Rapinoe chose the other five players: Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, Aja Wilson, and Aliyah Boston. Chiney Ogwumike was a guest on the show, and she was asked to pick the strong side. As soon as Cheney mentioned the team of forwards as powerful, the veteran guard quickly jumped with her claim about her team.
“What? You’re going with the bigs in an All-Star Game?… You’re going power forwards in an All-Star Game? I feel like All-Star Games is a lot of dribbling and threes. Just saying,” Bird explained on the ‘A Touch More’ podcast (Via YT/@atouchmore).
The former UConn star played in 12 All-Star games and had 11 starts. She averaged nearly seven points, six assists, and three rebounds per game. Even though she never won the All-Star MCVP award, her claim is correct to some extent.

Fact Check On Sue Bird’s All-Star Game Claims
The guards are originally the ones who initiate the offense and make plays for the forward players. In recent years, many guards have become elite shooters capable of netting baskets from long range, too. This increases their efficiency and effectiveness on the floor.

As per Sue Bird, the guards dominate the All-Star games, with no pressure to look after the FG%. Eight different guards have won the All-Star MVP awards, while seven forwards have won the accolade in the event’s history. In the recent five editions, the All-Star MVPs were all guards.
Interestingly, the 2025 All-Star roster includes more guards (12) than forward players (10). Watching who dominates the game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on July 19 will be interesting. One thing is for sure: the Storm legend will be rooting for guards.
