The Indiana Fever are looking to re-run the dramatic 2025 season, recalling most of the core players from the semifinal roster. Sophie Cunningham was the final piece that the franchise added, making a dangerous roster that put forward strong competition in the league.
One thing that many analysts and fans pointed out, though, was the duration of contracts: Aliyah Boston, Lexie Hull and Monique Billings received multi-year deals, while Cunningham and Mitchell signed one-year contracts. The former Missouri player was also not happy with the length of her contract.

Sophie Cunningham Explains Her Contract Expectations
Speaking on the ‘Show Me Something’ Podcast, the 29-year-old said she wanted a lucrative multi-year contract with her next franchise. While her heart was still with the Indiana side, she had to agree to a one-year contract.
During her media interactions, she blasted the contract length and said, “I just wanted to be somewhere for over one year. I’m 30 years old, I want to have a home, I want to get established.”

It is important to note that the player mentioned earlier that the Fever roster is very special and that she believes the team can go all the way. That was the key reason she signed with the Indiana Team. There is no doubt that Cunningham sacrificed her personal goal for the team, but her frustration is still understandable.

Interestingly, she found support from none other than her coach, who backed the player’s views.
Stephanie White Backs Sophie Cunningham On Her Contract Details
Taking over the Fever franchise in her second season, the former player and coach, White, is looking to make the most of the roster available to her. While she is happy with all the additions, she also backed the former Mercury player’s claims.
When reporters asked her about her take on Cunningham’s point, she said, “Look, it’s part of the business. Players, they want to know where they’re going to be, of course. They want to know where they are. And organizations want to make sure that they’re making the right decisions for now and for the long term.”

“So, clarifying that is important, certainly, but at the same time, they’re human beings. They feel things and they want things just like all of us. All of us want job security, right?” White concluded.
Keeping the commercials aside, Caitlin Clark is very excited to have Cunningham back in the lineup as the player is looking to win the championship, stay healthy and with her core.
