The New York Liberty had some interesting developments going on last season. While they won the championship in 2024, the team could only muster a playoff spot last year. And apparently, this was enough for the front office to fire head coach Sandy Brondello. As Chris DeMarco took over, the expectations from the fans skyrocketed.
Now, one of the vital components for the Liberty to do well is undoubtedly Sabrina Ionescu. Having joined Kobe Bryant owing to her incredible surge, the 28-year-old will be eager to make a strong impact this year. However, playing in the latest preseason game, the point guard did not have a great outing.

Sabrina Ionescu Keeps New York Liberty Concerned Following Injury
Having their best player injured is not the ideal way New York would want to start their campaign. As the team squared off against the Connecticut Sun, Liberty cruised to a 79-67 victory at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Unfortunately, the celebrations did not last long as the team’s mainstay, Ionescu, limped off with an ankle injury.
During the third quarter, the 2024 WNBA champion had an awkward landing. Immediately, the 4-time All-Star limped off the court and did not return. Such a sight did not please the fans.
Providing an update on X, Annie Costabile wrote, “Chris DeMarco confirms what the replay showed. Sabrina Ionescu rolled her left ankle. She’ll get an MRI tomorrow.”

Before exiting the game, the 5-foot-11 star had quite a decent performance. Logging in for 16 minutes, the California native dropped six points, one rebound, two assists, and three turnovers.
Meanwhile, despite the setback, Liberty managed to put up a strong fight.
How Did The New York Liberty Fare In Sabrina Ionescu’s Absence?
This year, the front office has persisted with a strong core. Alongside Ionescu, the likes of Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones were also re-signed. Thankfully, when the chips were down, the roster showed its depth. Following Ionescu’s inability to continue, Jones took over the charge.

She dropped 15 points, five rebounds, and a couple of blocks to see her team through. Giving her ample company was French star Marine Johannes, who chimed in with 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Thus, with all eyes on Ionescu’s injury, fans will wait with bated breath for what happens next.
