The Chicago sky surprised everyone from the start of the 2026 season, right when they traded Angel Reese to the Atlanta Dream, and again with the massive roster overhaul to compete for the title. Amid this ‘big’ change in direction, one thing that remained constant for the team was Kamilla Cardoso.
The Brazilian star is one of the few names remaining on the Sky payroll from the 2024 roster, the year she entered the league. Despite this mega change, the team is unbeaten in the season and holds the top position in the Eastern Conference.

Tyler Marsh Putting Faith In Kamilla Cardoso
The Chicago Sky started off well in the opening game against the Toronto Tempo and even achieved a rare feat in the game. The former South Carolina star was a major part of that win and record, and coach Marsh sees even bigger potential in his center.
Talking to the media about the 24-year-old star, Marsh said, “I think more so than anything, it’s a level of growth and maturity from the basketball standpoint that she is able to see and still grow into. It’s just she coming into her own, who she could be in this league. She could be unstoppable when she puts her mind to it, I think the communication has been over the course of this season, is to instill mindset of dominance for her.”

The coach added that her teammates and staff have full trust in the forward and want to use her in different positions to be more successful. He also pointed out her defensive ability, noting that it’s never highlighted in the games.

While the coach sees a bright future for the star, the two-time NCAA Champion can be the face of the franchise if she successfully walks down the path Coach Marsh is drawing for her.
Kamilla Cardoso Could Become Face of the Chicago Sky Franchise
Following the blockbuster trade sending Angel Reese to the Atlanta Dream, Kamilla Cardoso has officially stepped into the central role for the Chicago Sky, becoming the undisputed cornerstone of the franchise’s frontcourt rebuild. As a 6-foot-7 elite center and former national champion, Cardoso brings immense physical dominance and improved efficiency to a re-tooled Sky roster looking to erase a 10-34 record.
After showing significant growth in her second season, averaging 13.6 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks under head coach Tyler Marsh, the South Carolina product is poised to be the focal point of the offense. Her ability to dominate the paint and anchor the defense allows Chicago to build a new identity around her, separating the “Twin Towers” pairing of the 2024 draft class.

With veterans like Skylar Diggins-Smith now present, Cardoso has a new pick-and-roll partner to maximize her scoring. Her transition to a primary role represents a deliberate shift toward long-term stability in the paint for Chicago.
