DeWanna Bonner Stays With Phoenix As Mercury Chases 2026 Championship

The Phoenix Mercury were surging in the last season. Reaching the finals, their matchup with the Las Vegas Aces was supposed to be a close one. Unfortunately, as the Mercury had a heartbreak, one of their primary stars, DeWanna Bonner, too, ended the season disappointed. Despite dropping some historic performances against New York, the final stretch did not pan out as expected. 

Following the 4-0 drubbing in the finals, Bonner penned down an emotional note reflecting on her journey. But as the sun completed a full rotation, the 6-time WNBA All-Star is ready to go for the kill once again. And she is back in her familiar territory.

DeWanna Bonner Re-Signs With The Phoenix Mercury

The 38-year-old stirred up a controversy when she left the Indiana Fever. But joining the Mercury, she seemed pretty much at home. Stepping into her 17th WNBA season, the veteran star has signed with Phoenix for the 2026 season. This would bolster the Mercury’s dreams of chasing the championship this year and avenge last year’s heartbreak. 

Speaking about their recent acquisition, general manager Nick U’Ren said, “Having DeWanna back in a Mercury uniform is incredibly meaningful to our organization. She brings a championship mindset, elite skillset and the kind of leadership that defines winning teams.”

The 2-time WNBA champion will be entering her 12th season with Phoenix. Such a feat lists her second in franchise history. Diana Taurasi is at the number one spot with 20 seasons for the team. Coming to her performance last season, Bonner dropped 10.9 points and 4.3 rebounds for the Mercury. She suited up in 24 games while also acquiring one start.

Now, with a thin free agency, the primary aim for the front office is to gather utility players. Signing Bonner looks like the right decision for the Mercury. Additionally, they must also sign Kahleah Copper. That way, the core trio of Copper, Bonner, and Thomas can direct the play as the rest revolves around them.
