The Dallas Wings were one of the top five teams in the WNBA in 2026, thanks to strong offseason moves and signings. The franchise also selected experienced Jose Fernandez as the head coach, aiming to improve in the 2026 season.
The coach also set high standards for the star-studded Wings’ team, and they did so in the opening game of the season. But after that, back-to-back losses, importantly, after leading the games at the half, were more disappointing.
After the recent loss, the coach didn’t hold back and lashed out at the players.

Jose Fernandez Thrashes Team Mentality After Loss Against Lynx
There had been huge expectations from the wings team after back-to-back top picks and a mega shake-up during the off-season. The side’s recent losses, though, bring back their 2025 season outcomes, and the coach quickly sounds an alarm to the players in the post-game interview.
“It’s real talk, and it’s accountability. That’s what I told them. I know there’s selfishness in this locker room. There is,” Fernandez said.

“You gotta look in the mirror and be accountable on how you played. And don’t get upset if you think that you should have played more, or you didn’t play enough, or you didn’t get the shots that you think you should have gotten,” he added. “Really good teams, they don’t give a st about that. Know what they give a st about? Give a s**t about winning, because that’s what matters.”
While the team was really in the game, the coach decided to take out top performers like Maddy Siegrist and Azzi Fudd, which were also questionable decisions.
Jose Fernandez Explains His Rotations Late In Game
After the team lacked offense early in the game, Siegrist came on the court and supported Paige Bueckers, who had to put in extra effort in the game. But the coach later used the player for a total of eight minutes in the second half.
Similarly, the 2026 rookie was having a strong defensive outing, while the other players were struggling, yet the coach didn’t use her when the Lynx were closing in on the Wings’ total. The coach provided his reasons in the press conference.
I asked Jose Fernandez about his decision not playing Maddy Siegrist in the fourth quarter and why he took Azzi Fudd out once the game got close, especially when her defense could have helped late in the game. pic.twitter.com/JqcyQvA2ox

It’s important to note that the coach mentioned that Fudd is ready to take on the starter role when needed, but he didn’t trust her when she was playing great defense.
