Caitlin Clark called Kelsey Mitchell a priority signing for the Indiana Fever and also made a wish to get Sophie Cunningham back in the lineup for the 2026 season. The Indiana Fever completed both wishes, as they had already listed KM as their top free-agent signing priority, but never mentioned any other player.
They recently added three players, Ty Harris, Damaris Dantas, and Cunningham to the lineup. While fans had no question about the other two signings, they raised questions about the former Missouri star’s addition.

Fans Doubt Sophie Cunningham’s Signing
Apart from Mitchell, their first signing for the Fever team was Lexie Hull, and then they pounced on the chance to add Molique Billings to the roster to form a strong core for the 2026 season. Now adding other stars, the franchise signed three players in one day, including the 29-year-old versatile forward on a one-year contract.
Fans thus question the intentions to sign the star, as one fan referenced her IG post and wrote, “Sophie’s IG post that told me Fever were short changing her with a one-year deal. She is running 2k but they pretended her injury a concern. Bad organization.”

She’s really just not that good of a player. I wouldn’t pay her a big contract when I can get the same production out of the draft.

Organization has to make room for CCs Superman contract next year. They gave a 1 year de because they are going to need to restructure contracts after this season if they want to keep the team together…. Good organization.

While fans shared their views on the signing, the Fever GM praised the player for her impact, and the player also opened up about re-signing with the Fever.
Sophie Cunningham Opened Up On Reasons Behind Singing With Indiana Fever
During the offseason, Cunningham put forward a condition for her destination in the 2026 season during her podcast episode. The player had already signed with Project B and was seeking a multi-year deal. But the Fever contract is for one year, which contradicts her ‘dream’. Yet she provided the reason for her signing the contract.
Cunningham said, “We fought through a ton of adversity, and it was important to me that we have a chance to see through what we started. I have a feeling this is going to be another special season. So I’m excited to get things started and to, of course, keep playing in front of the best fans in the WNBA. Let’s get spicy!”
