When the WNBA board of governors approved the new CBA, most of the players were elated. After all, following a long struggle, they would finally be able to make a lot more money than before. For Golden State Valkyries star Kate Martin, too, the upcoming WNBA season was an exciting opportunity.
Unfortunately, the 25-year-old had an unwanted surprise when she was waved off by the Valkyries. Becoming a free agent right before the season, Martin’s future looked bleak. And as she spoke with the media, the young basketball star’s voice choked up.

Kate Martin Cannot Control Her Tears Speaking About Her Latest Career-Turmoil
The Golden State had a phenomenal run last year. Trying to build on the momentum this season, Natalie Nakase stated that the management wanted to build the best team. But that did not help the 25-year-old’s cause at all.
This Sunday, the 6-foot guard broke her silence for the first time. Speaking with the media, the former Valkyries star could not control her emotions. She almost cried.
“It was not easy at all. Obviously, it’s a business decision. That’s what professional sports is. It’s a business and, you know, I just had to do what was best for me in my career,” said Martin.

Last season, Martin emerged as one of the most reliable backup guards for Nakase and her team. Suiting up in 42 games, the blooming star averaged 6.2 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.0 assists. Unfortunately, suffering a grade 2 hamstring injury, the Illinois native missed most of the training camp.
Thankfully, the former Golden State Valkyries star found a new home in Los Angeles just three days after the team waived her.
Kate Martin Elated After Joining Los Angeles Sparks
The 25-year-old had to wait for three days before she found herself a new jersey. Ahead of Sparks’ season opener on May 10, the front office decided to rope in Martin on a developmental contract. This means that the star player will practice with the team. The team can also activate her for a maximum of 12 games during the ongoing season.

Reflecting on her whirlwind journey so far, Martin stated, “Crazy, chaotic. But honestly found a lot of clarity, lot of confidence of where I’m at and where the future of my career is heading. Honestly kind of all over the place but feeling really good and having a lot of clarity right now.”
Well, with things looking a bit better, the 25-year-old will still have to work hard to make the opportunity count.
