The New York Liberty had a great run in 2024. Winning the WNBA championship, the team looked ready to defend its title last year. Unfortunately, they could not advance past the playoffs, leading to their head coach, Sandy Brondello, being fired. This year, too, the injuries plagued the team, forcing the front office to sign players on hardship contracts.
Surprisingly, despite not having the ideal conditions, Liberty did start off on a winning note. And now, with four games in, New York’s performance graph is steadily going upwards. So much so that the team has achieved a rare WNBA feat.

New York Liberty Makes History Following Incredible Surge
After four games, the Liberty will be breathing a lot easier. Having lost just one game against the Portland Fire, New York has won all three of its games. Now, while a 3-1 run is a story-worthy topic in itself, Liberty is making the news for its scoring.
For the first time in WNBA history, a team has dropped more than 95 points in all of its opening four games. To give a sense of how dominant the run is, none of the teams have managed to score 95+ points in more than 2 games to start the season.

Opening the season against the Connecticut Sun, it was Breanna Stewart who made all the headlines. Logging in for 28 minutes, the star player dropped 31 points to lead Liberty to a 106-75 victory. Next up were the Washington Mystics. Marine Johannes (25 points) and Stewart (23 points) combined to put over their team 98-93.

Meanwhile, as Portland Fire shocked the former champions, the team quickly turned it around and had its revenge right away.
New York Liberty Avenges Shock Loss Against Portland Fire With Dominant Victory
Following a 2-0 winning start, a confident Liberty bunch came face-to-face with the Fire. As the game swung like a pendulum, Sarah Ashlee-Barker clinched a buzzer-beater basket to upset New York 98-96. Unfortunately, the happiness did not last long enough for Portland.
Facing the Liberty again, the latter showed why they were the champions. Taking control from the beginning, Stewart and co. ran away with the game. Clinching a 100-82 win, revenge was complete for the 2024 champions.
