At the end of the 2025 season, GM Jonathan Kolb hinted at a ‘massive opportunity’ for the side following the mega free agency market available in the 2026 season. The franchise made sure its core remains intact with Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones confirming their loyalty with the franchise, but now the franchise added another mega star in Satou Sabally to the already stacked roster.
As per reports, the forward signed a multi-year deal with the franchise, looking to bring a championship back to New York after missing the opportunity in 2025.

Satou Sabally Signs With New York Liberty
The WNBA 2026free agency saw multiple players moving to promising avenues, which started with Angel Reese’s move to the Atlanta Dream. It was one of the ‘game-changing’ moves for both player and franchise. The former Oregon player joining the Liberty side would top that hype.
The 27-year-old is a three-time All-Star and one of the best power forwards in the league, last season with the Mercury. Along with Alyssa Thomas, the player carried the Mercury team in the initial phases of the 2025 season, and then Kahleah Copper’s return made them one of the dynamic trios in the league.

Now joining JJ-Stewie and Sab, the 6-foot-4 forward will have more support and can be more efficient on the floor. With a career average of 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists, the player would be a perfect fit around Breanna Stewart, who carried the team in the 2025 season.

Will The Additon Of Satou Sabally help the New York Liberty reclaim the top spot?
The aim to sign a top player as a free agent was to make a strong push for the title. The front office tried to address the key issue in the 2025 season – rebounding. After finishing in the top two in rebounding in 2023 and 2024, New York fell all the way to tenth in rebounding in 2025. While Jones and Stewart’s injuries affected the stats, the 2020 rookie has been one of the better rebounding forwards in the WNBA. Yet with her addition, Liberty faces a critical offseason with major decisions looming for its core stars.

While the players would be a massive upgrade over the 2025 roster, the Aces also kept its championship core, Dream added Angel Reese, Sparks added Nneka Ogwumike, and Fever side added Monique Billings, making the championship a potential five-horse race on paper.
