The end of the 2026 WNBA draft answered many questions, with the league pushing to start the season on schedule. The Dallas Wings selected Azzi Fudd as the first overall pick. Also there were discussions about the players’ massive salaries, and every team has now filled its roster for training camp.
A thing that had an obvious answer and yet the first overall pick didn’t directly answer was her feelings about reuniting with her former champion teammate, Paige Bueckers.

Azzi Fudd Excited To Play Alongside Paige Bueckers
One of the reasons for the UConn senior’s selection as the first overall pick was her connection with Paige Bueckers, with whom she won national championships together for the Huskies. During her recent appearance on the Good Morning America show, Fudd spoke about playing alongside the 2025 Rookie of the Year winner.
“Like you said, we know how to win together, how to play together, so I am super excited to get another chance to play with her. It gonna be incredible,” Fudd responded. Interestingly, Fudd earlier responded with just three words about the possible reunion.

It’s also important to note that Bueckers helped the Virginia-born star join the Huskies, as she said, “You see all these open shots I’m giving to my teammates? That’s going to be AZ if she comes to UConn and plays with me.”

NBA Megastar Backs Azzi Fudd-Paige Bueckers Reunion In WNBA
Speaking about the possible first overall pick by the Wings, Carmelo Anthony gave his vote to the UConn star and mentioned a reason behind it on his ‘ 7 PM In Brooklyn’ podcast.
Anthony said. “They know how to play together, they know how to win. They know each other, so if you could get continuity in the backcourt like that, if it was me, I know my ups and downs, I know me as a person outside of basketball, and now the franchise player is bringing in another potential franchise player.”
"I would pair Azzi up with Paige … it's proven over 4 years."
